Cultural Interview
Instructions for completing assignment: You will conduct an interview with an adult from a culture other than your own. You will also research this culture using at least three other respected sources. Using the interview material along with the outside research, you will write a 3-page paper about what you have learned. Make sure that the paper provides information about the cultural group you have chosen, but also how your interviewee’s experiences as a member of that cultural group has affected his or her learning and academic experience in the U.S. Some suggested groups include: Asian/Asian American African/African American Middle Eastern/Middle Eastern American Hispanic/Hispanic American Gay, Lesbian, Transgender, Transexual, etc. Religious groups: Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Jehovah’s Witness, Mormon, Mennonite, etc. Following the instructions for the assignment above, you will prepare a list of at least 10 questions (in addition to demographic questions that provide background on the interviewee) that you plan to ask your interviewee. Focus your questions on the influence that their specific cultural background has on their academic and learning experiences. You should collect all of the information that you think someone might want to know about your interviewee, including age, gender, country of origin, age upon arrival in the U.S. (if applicable), family, work, education, etc., but these questions are not part of the 10 required questions. Use the ideas from the readings this week to help you develop meaningful questions. Submit the questions to Canvas for approval BEFORE conducting your interview. 4. Conduct your cultural interview, complete your outside research, and write your report. Incorporate what you learned from your research and your interview into a 3-page report that includes references (APA format). Organize your report thematically to address what you learned about your interviewee, his or her culture, and how his or her culture affected his or her education. This paper should not be a list of questions and answers but a synthesis of the information. Make sure you include information about how what you learned will influence your teaching in the future.
