Early Baroque Essays

Format and submit this assignment according to the instructions in the Syllabus. Remember to format your assignment as an .RTF file. In essays of not more than one page (but not less than three-fourths of a page): Describe how the components of recitative and aria function (1) dramatically and (2) musically in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and Monteverdi’s Coronation of Poppea. Review those features of Gabrieli’s “O magnum mysterium” which link it to the Renaissance and those which link it to the Baroque. Define recitative and aria and describe how they function in opera. Describe the central features of Frescobaldi’s Suite. Each essay should be about three-fourths of a page, so that altogether the assignment should include at least three pages but no more than four pages.
