Basic employment issues
Description
5000 words Basic employment issues
This is the basis for a thesis, not the thesis proposal! It should follow the mainstream literature accounts of employment: (1) workers enter the labour market seeking work because they have no other method to secure income (Peter Nolan, Richard Hyman, Lipsey & Chrystal, Jill Rubery); (2) the contract of employment sets out the terms and conditions of employment and represents an exchange of work for wages (performance for pay) — see Lord Wedderburn, Paul Edwards, Otto Kahn Freund, Keith Ewing, and ACAS; (3) once employed workers are subject to controls over both their tasks and their behaviour — this is job regulation (see Hugh Clegg, WEJ McCarthy, Alan Fox, Ed Heery, Bruce Kaufman, and William Brown); (4) as workers work they become subject to problems of process and management (see F.W. Taylor, Harry Braverman, David Knights, Paul Thompson); (5) workers may resist as individuals or collectively the dominant rule of management (John Kelly, Huw Beynon, Gerry Cohen, and Richard Hyman).
