Consulting on Training; Memorandum Format
A needs analysis of an organization with high turn-over revealed that while a clear procedure for managing disputes was in place for formal complaints, high levels of dissatisfaction existed because of the failure by management to deal with day to day “personality” conflicts. HR is not interested in working on the conflict management system as a whole because of the resistance to change by the legal department. However, the Director has been tasked with training all the company’s 540 employees in basic conflict resolution skills so that they are better able to identify conflict early, respond in an emotionally mature manner, and resolve any differences using interest based techniques. HR are contemplating working with you, an independent trainer with your own small business. They have asked you to explain what you are going to do for them in a short business styled proposal, addressed to the Director of HR. They specifically ask that you articulate a list of learning objectives for the training using instructional designer verbs. Beyond describing suitable learning objectives, how would you propose working with them to meet their challenge? Please address the limitations of not addressing the system-wide challenge, but do not make that the thrust of your memorandum. Describe your approach in a memorandum to your client.
