Social Change Analysis
Pick a social issue of your choice. Pick something you want to talk about, something you feel strongly about. It can be anything that has social implications from the popular culture subjects that we’ve discussed to any other issue that is controversial enough to warrant discussion. Question a power structure, argue that materialism is America’s religion, look at why goals in life should be reasonable and attainable, take a close look at student debt, look at the diet of Americans, question social equity, address a problem of homelessness in your neighborhood, the issue of gender in the media, or the issue of rape at college parties. You can choose anything that has broad social implications beyond yourself and is rooted in our culture. You will make an argument about this issue—why something should be changed, why something should be perpetuated, whatever your point of view is—and you will use your sources to argue against or use them to support your argument. This paper involves causal analysis—explaining why things happen the way they do and what can be done about them. Find sources that outline or help to identify the social issue that you are writing about. Prove to us through the documenting of these sources that this is a social issue worthy of our attentions. Then find other sources that look at possible solutions or other arguments about this issue. Above all, make sure that your opinion is the one shining through. It will be important for you to provide a high degree of analysis and at least five sources. Have a works cited page and use proper MLA format for the quotes in your 7-10 page.
