It should be written based on the essays from Faces of Honor by Johnson, Lyman. L from chapters 1-6 Write an essay of approximately 750-1000 words (three to four double-spaced pages – no less than two and a half and no more than four and a half pages) about the topic below. It needs to be double-spaced, with normal font size and margins. It should be grammatically sound (be sure to proofread carefully!), and well organized. You will be evaluated not only on the strength of your argument and evidence, but also on how effectively you synthesize the material and present your ideas with coherence and clarity. In short, you need to demonstrate cogent analytical and rhetorical skills. Each of you needs to work independently on the paper. Use the MLA citation standards (link for information is on the syllabus), and be sure to include a proper works cited listing and the signed honor code pledge. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES OF ANY KIND ARE PERMITTED (i.e. only use the assigned texts we are using in this class; you can include the Atlas for any contextual information if you wish, but the thesis and analysis should come from the assigned readings). You also will need to submit the essay through Turnitin on Blackboard; I will provide detailed instructions in class. This essay will be due at the beginning of class on Friday, May 31. You can turn it in any time before that too, of course. It will drop one full letter grade — A to B, B to C, etc. — for each day late (e.g. if it is in by the same time the following day, it drops one full grade, by the same time two days later, two full grades, etc.; weekend days count). This essay will be evaluated along the following four lines: 1. Clarity and strength of thesis statement and argument 2. Specific textual support 3. Organizational coherence 4. Technical (grammatical) competence ESSAY TOPIC: Drawing from the essays in Johnson and Lipsett-Rivera, eds., The Faces of Honor, analyze the myriad ways in which people challenged the social norms and system of values in place in Colonial Latin America. The paper should be 825 words long
