Online FGs vs. Traditional FGs

W7 – Part 1: Week 07 Discussion 01: Online FGs vs. Traditional FGs Instructions As you are likely aware more and more things are now possible online. Many things we treat as routine online activities were once impossible, from online banking to online romantic relationships. A concrete example of this is this class and degree. As recently as 2012 the USC MMLIS degree was not available online. Specific to this discussion board are online FGs. Traditional FGs occurred with the moderator and participants in the same physical location. Today it is possible to conduct FGs online. Are online FGs an effective replacement for traditional in-person FGs or simply a complimentary research collection method? This is an ongoing debate within the research community, but it is widely recognized that online FGs are a valuable approach for researchers. As with any research approach there are strengths and weaknesses of the online FG compared to the traditional FG. Rather than me presenting you with a list of the differences and highlighting the advantages and disadvantages this is your task in this discussion board. List one advantage and one disadvantage of an online FG vs. a traditional FG. You may use a variety of skills/tools to complete this task, such as your experience of FGs, common sense, or internet search tools. Present your response in the format below. For example: 1. Online FGs allow participants from diverse geographic locations to participate which is hard to achieve with a traditional FG. 2. In an online FG it is difficult to know if you have participants’ complete attention. In a traditional FG it is easier to control and remove distractions. 3.
