How have these trends changed over time? What has driven the change in trends? Why is palm oil so in demand? What products/industries use it? Find some products in your cupboard or home that contain palm oil, and comment on if you knew how ubiquitous it was. What are some of the pros of palm oil over other crops? What are some of the negative consequences of how palm oil is being cultivated? Discuss some of the challenges faced by small-scale oil palm growers. How do their practices compare with large company industrial cultivation? The Great REDD gamble ( https://www.foei.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/The-great-REDD-gamble.pdf (Friends of the Earth International, 2014) What is REDD (need to do a little outside research for this), and what are some of the drawbacks listed? Can you find any other evidence to support this? If REDD is not the answer, what do FoEI propose as an alternative? Dive into one of the case studies mentioned and do some independent research to learn more. Re-analyze the case study using your new knowledge on the subject. Chapter in New Strategies for Wicked Problems) Select one of the conundrums Lackey mentions that interests you, and flesh out a brief analysis of both sides of the conundrum. For example, one conundrum is “At least several billion dollars has been spent to restore wild salmon, but their overall, long-term downward trajectory continues”…look into what this restoration has looked like, where it’s been completed, and also find some population numbers. Can you find any clues as to why this conundrum exists? For several, Lackey cites an article – that would be a great place to start!
