Euler Formula
Objective: Choose a problem that is of interest to you and that fits intothe general theme of the course. Write a term paper (no shorter than 5 pages) and give a presentation on the paper. The presentation should run for at least 15minutes (per person); however, it should not last for more than 20minutes. Requirements: (0) Once you decide on a problem, please consult with the professor and/or the TA to make sure the problem is suitable for this course. Please bring an outline. (1) Present the history of the problem. e.g., how long has the problem been around? Who has considered it? What is known about the problem? Is there a problem that’s related to the problem and that is still open? (2) The problem can not be a theorem in a well-known undergraduate text book. E.g., the fundamentaltheorem of calculus. (3) Your paper and the presentation should be self-contained. It should reflect your true understanding of the problem. You may assume knowledge of calculus (at the level of Math 21) and linear algebra (at the level of Math 22) and some basic results in real/complex analysis. Make sure you can explain all the concepts involved to your fellow students. (4) The paper must clearly state the problem and present a solution in full. (5) You mustuse a computer to type up your paper, in Word or LaTeX (preferred).(6) In your presentation please state the problem and give an outline for the solution. Then present the solution with all the details. You should be prepared to answer any questions your audience may ask you. (7) Before you write the paper, please submit a one-paragraph description for your project. Your description will be uploaded to CANVAS, so that we can avoid having two students write about the same problem. Please send your one-paragraph description to your TA Brian [email protected](8) You should schedule your presentation between April 30, 2019and June 6, 2019(Tuesday/Thursday). There will be an online sign-up sheet. Please mark downthe time you want to speak. The earlier you sign up the more flexible the schedule is. You must sign up before April 30, 2019. If you don’t sign up by then, you will be assigned a date randomly. The term paper can be turned in after your presentation, but it must be turned in no later than June 6, 2019. Electronic submission is encouraged. Please submit your paper to your TA.
