“Instrumental rationality” over “value-rationality” Max Weber
Watch and analyze the following clip from “Glengarry Glen Ross.” (We watched a section of it in class earlier this semester.) Your task is to explain how the clip represents the near total ascendance of “instrumental rationality” over “value-rationality”, as Weber defined these terms. Carefully read and re-read the Weber selection on PESC in our book, and examine your class notes on this topic. You may wish to focus on particular scenes or characters in preparing your argument, but your goal is to APPLY Weber’s ideas to the scene. (it’s not necessary for you to watch the whole movie, but of course, you may do that if you wish.) *Use quotes from the protestant work ethic and spirit of capitalism you can find a pdf on google I think but do not worry about getting the citations perfect I will have to go back in and change them anyway.
