Paper details Assignment structure The Title Page Please make your title no more than one or maximum two sentences, and make it as informative as possible. Here is an example: “The psychological impact of the Greek economic crisis: A mixed method study” The title appears on a page of its own called the ‘title page’. On this page and below the title you should also place your name and the assignment word count. Abstract 200-250 words approximately. Think of an abstract as a highly condensed summary of your entire paper. Structure it in the same order as your paper, and write this section last. The purpose of your abstract is to provide a brief yet thorough overview. It is the most important paragraph of your entire paper and reading it will inform the reader if it is worth reading the rest of your paper! The Introduction The introduction follows the abstract page and could have the title ‘Introduction’ or alternatively ‘Background to study’. Introduce your study and state clearly the purpose and aims of your study. Critically review the findings of previous research and make links to relevant theories to show why the research is important. At end explain why you will use a mixed-method approach and why your particular choice of data collection methods (at least one quantiatative and one qualitative method) is justified. Discuss the advantages of triangulation of data collection methods and / or approaches, including issues of reliability, validity, credibility, transferability, dependability etc. The Method Section This is one of the most important sections of any research proposal. It should include at least the following sub-sections, in detail: (you may choose to include other headings in addition) Participants Explain how participants will be identified for your study. What sampling technique is to be used and what are the inclusion/exclusion criteria? Any compensation? Acknowledge how/if the participants will be known to you personally and give an idea of who the researcher is (your gender, status as a student etc.). Data Collection procedure and materials e.g. for qualitative interviews: What type of interviews will you conduct? How will you develop your interview guide? Which main topics will be in the interview guide? How closely will you stick to it in the interviews? Where (at the participants’ homes?), when (e.g. during November-December 2017) and for how long (e.g. 30 mins – 1 hour) will your interviews be carried out? Detail the recording and transcribing procedure. Ethical procedures and issues must be discussed and addressed, including how ethical approval will be sought. Insert any relevant forms (e.g. consent form) in the Appendices and refer to them in the text. Data Analysis Methods Describe the statistical test(s) to be used for the quantitative part of your study e.g. multiple regression, MANOVA etc.(and justify the choice according to the type of data you will have and your hypotheses). Outline the exact stages of analysis to be used for the qualitative technique you have chosen. It is not enough to state only that e.g. Grounded Theory or Thematic Analysis will be used. You would need to explain e.g. how initial coding is done, how emerging categories are identified, how memos and diagrams are used. Etc. Discussion You cannot do this section as your research is hypothetical. Conclusion Don’t forget to include a concluding paragraph or two – this section should sum up why your research is important and what the potential contribution to knowledge and/or practice would be if your findings were to be significant / in line with your expectations (which is based on your literature search).
