American culture is filled with “labels.” They can be helpful, but can also hinder our ability to progress. Our comfort with labeling is evident in the continually growing list of “labels” with which we are familiar. Each of our readings identifies a label and discusses a specific impact surrounding that label. In this essay, you will interact with one of these authors’ ideas, respond with your own opinion, and incorporate secondary sources to support your thesis. Aside from your own experiences and observations, our class readings will be the only sources utilized for this essay.
Select one of the essays from Signs of Life that we have read in class, identify the author’s main point (thesis), and first explain why you agree or disagree with his or her premise, and then argue for or against its relevancy in 2019.
Your essay needs to then use at least two (2) additional sources, from our readings, to support your argument.
This essay will need a strong, clearly written thesis statement. One that clearly establishes YOUR stance in relation to the author’s stance. The essay will then need support, that is well thought out, and organized in a way that will develop your argument to a clear conclusion. You must be very careful not to summarize the readings, but to establish your own ideas in relation to the readings.
In addition to the overall essay requirements listed in the syllabus, your essay must meet the following expectations:
●
Your essay must be a minimum of 3 full pages, and no more than 4 pages in length.
●
You must include an MLA formatted works cited page that doesn’t apply towards page count.
Questions to think about while prewriting:
●
What (meanings, values, etc.) was the author trying to promote?
●
What is my personal position relative to the author’s?
How has reading and reflecting on this affected my own opinion(s) or life experience(s
