Essay Assignment #1 In this first essay assignment, you are asked to choose one of the metaphors/images from Plato’s Republic (Books 1-7) and speak to its importance. As per the syllabus, primary text to be used only; secondary sources strictly forbidden. The essay must follow the following structure and organization: THESIS: A clear sentence that states the main argument of your paper that includes the central reason. Use the word “because.” ARGUMENT #1: Explain & expand your ideas about the metaphor and the work that it is doing in the Republic. ARGUMENT #2: Explain how the metaphor illuminates Justice in the city. ARGUMENT #3: Explain how the metaphor illuminates Justice in the soul. COUNTER-ARGUMENT: Find the opposite idea of the thesis. What is missing/hiding? State the truth in the opposition. COUNTER the COUNTER: Synthesize the ideas and demonstrate how your argument is superior. CONCLUSION: Bring it home! Your paper should be 5-6 pages (double-spaced, standard font & margins). You should employ an in-text citation style. No secondary sources are permitted. Late Submission of Work: • Papers/assignments must be submitted in class to the Instructor on the day they are due. • The Political Science drop-¬box is intended to collect late assignments only, or if a student has extenuating circumstances which have been approved by the instructor, at least a week before the due date. • There will be a mandatory late penalty for any papers/assignments collected from the drop-box without prior approval, even on the date the assignment is due. This policy has been implemented to ensure students attend class on assignment due dates. • Late penalties are one-¬third letter grade per day late, i.e. a paper grade B+ is downgraded to B the first late day, followed by B‐ the next etc. • Papers more than 1 week late will not be accepted without a prior extension being granted by the instructor. Valid medical excuses only accepted for term work extensions
