GENDER IDENTITY IN THE 21ST CENTURY ESSAY

July 28, 2024/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by Admin

OUTLINE: Introduction: You can begin this essay by discussing how the women’s movement and other movements such as gay rights of the 1970s and even prior to that, the Civil Rights legislation of the 1960s paved the way for the movement that we have today: the LGBTQ+ movement. Define LGBTQ+ ( lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and other). Then write about how the 21stcentury, unlike the 20thcentury, has opened up the idea of multiple identities around gender. Prior to today’s society, gender was considered to be interchangeable with sex—meaning it was a binary between male and female. As well, the21st Century sparked a movement in rights for transgender people as well as a recognition that people identify their gender. (You can refer to the article Gender Identity for a definition of gender and binary.) THESIS: Your thesis can be an exploration of all the different gender identities and issues that people have with gender or it can be an argument as whether the focus on Gender Identity is a civil rights issue or whether it is not a civil rights issue but more of a personal quest for identity. Your thesis can explain how gender is a “social construction” or personal choice, not only a biological determination.Fr example, you may point about that in American society , the individual has the right to be whatever he she or they choose to be, unlike other nations and cultures that do not accept any form of gender identity other than the binary of male or female. Or- you may argue that gender identity, in this sense being who or are or “you doing you,” is part of the American Dream. However, not everyone in this country agrees that gender is only “you doing you”. Many religions and cultures and otherwise conservative people within the US do not accept gender. Variation. Recently we have seen a rise in the movement for transgender rights. You may agree or disagree, but you can also write a thesis that will analyze the issue of Gender Identity. Section 1 Refer to the article on Gender Identity Establish a definition of Gender Refer to scientific explanation of Gender Open the discussion of gender variation, such as ‘the 58 genders from Facebook.” Refer to the current problems and cases of transgender rights Section 2: Explain in more detail the cause for Transgender Rights, (or more generally LGBTQ+) both positive and negative Look to examples such as Jazz Jennings and what she represents for young people struggling with gender identity. Look up statistics, such as transgender people being the object of violence against them as well as vulnerable to depression and suicide. Analyze how compassion and community can affect the LGBTQ+ community. Section 3: Explain, analyze or argue some of the current problems with gender identity. Refer to the article on Trans Kids. Explain the authors view State whether you agree, disagree or think that we as a society need to understand the issue more. You can also add how if some ideas such as “Unsexing the Birth Certificate”are not helpful or complicated and whether you agree or disagree; so, you can agree on some points and disagree on others—it’s your perspective. Do basic research on the current legislation around “bathroom” laws and “locker room” issues for young people. Cite some of the legal challenges both to the LGBTQ+ community and to those who oppose permissive gender laws Is Gender Identity a Civil rights Issue: explain your view and/or the opposing views people have on this point. Section 4: Do basic google research on how society treated LGBTQ+ community historically , such as “Conversion Therapy” for individuals who were determined to be homosexual, and other horrific treatments such as hormonal injections, electroshock therapy and in some societies the murder of gay people. Argue or discuss how times have changed for the better. You can find the stories of people who suffered from terrible treatments by googling .
