Focus on 1 specific text for your research and analysis. You will research and analyze this text in more depth and detail. WHAT IS A SAMPLE OUTLINE FOR WP 3? EXAMPLE: Susan’s brainstorming questions for James Baldwin’s essay “The Artist’s Struggle for Integrity.” If I were writing WP 3, here is how I would outline my research: Why will this text be important ten years from now? In 2029 Baldwin’s essay will be 66 years old. What might the world look like in 2029? How can I imagine or envision this world? Would it help to create photos, illustrations, charts, or videos of what I imagine? Will the message of struggling for integrity in difficult times still be important in 2029? Why or why not? Will we still need to “use our suffering to connect with everyone else alive” in 2029? Why or why not? What are the connections to the other texts we have studied in class? We can learn from the struggles for integrity have happened throughout history and we can look at our local struggle in Memphis as part of a larger struggle. (King) We need to consider the consequences of “maintaining the lie.” We also need to consider the question of whether or not we should share our resources with the rest of the world. (Black Panther) We can use the difficulties of our own past to gain strength for the present and the future. (Kendrick Lamar) Why are these connections important? I need to consider why the message of struggling for integrity is important and why that message is complicated. Why does struggling for integrity seem complicated in each of these texts? I need to think about what happens when conditions for gaining integrity seem hopeless. How does each text describe the consequences of hopelessness? I need to think about the conditions that create hope in times of hopelessness. How does each text describe the conditions for creating hope? Where can I find more ideas to help inform my opinion? I can read studies about the characteristics, hopes, and dreams of Generation Z. I can interview and survey my peers about their visions for the future. I can read more more texts (speeches, essays, stories, books, interviews) by Baldwin. I can read scholarly articles and watch videos and lectures that address Baldwin’s work. I can read scholarly articles and watch videos and lectures that address aspects of the future that are interesting to me, such as climate change, cultural shifts, and economic development.
