Global water crisis, Global pandemics
Question #1 global water crisis: (800 words) Our first unit explored many reasons why the world may be facing a global water supply crisis. By examining the historical record, we saw how the past shaped the way we interact with water today, including both successful and unsuccessful strategies for coping with water supply, pollution, and management. This question asks you to identify the two most important lessons we can learn from the history of humanity’s interaction with water: Using a variety of specific evidence from our Unit #1 materials (provided), identify what you believe are the two most important lessons we can learn from the history of humanity’s interaction with water. What strategies were successful or unsuccessful? Why do you think these two lessons are most important? Additional notes: -Strong answers will use a wide variety of specific evidence from our unit materials (Water Wars, the online readings, videos, and in-class presentations). -Be sure to cite at least three substantial examples from Shiva’s Water Wars. -Be sure to focus on the history of human interaction with water; avoid discussing the contemporary period (for this class, post-2010) -Do not use information from outside our course (no additional research is required). Question #2 Global pandemics : (800 words) Our second unit explored how various societies have coped with outbreaks of pandemic disease. We also discussed how human actions have contributed to (or, in some cases, limited) the spread of disease. This question asks you to compare these actions and reactions related to historical pandemics to those related to AIDS as described in John Aberth’s The First Horseman(I don’t have the book): Using a variety of specific evidence from our Unit #2 materials, identify what you believe are the two most important similarities or differences in the ways societies encouraged or limited the impacts of the historical pandemics we have studied (smallpox, the bubonic plague, and/or influenza) and that of the AIDS pandemic. Why did you choose these as most important? Additional notes: -Strong answers will use a wide variety of specific evidence from our unit materials (the online readings, videos, and in-class presentations). -Use The First Horseman as the source for evidence regarding AIDS. No additional outside research is required. -While you may consider all three historical outbreaks/diseases (smallpox, the bubonic plague, and influenza) you are required to consider at least two of these historical outbreaks/diseases.
