Trade Relationship between U.S. and Mexico
In your own words, describe the trade relationship between the U.S. and Mexico or Guatemala, referring to specific commodities (e.g. coffee) and institutions (e.g. maquiladoras). In what ways can NAFTA be viewed as doing structural violence to people in Mexico? How do U.S. companies take advantage of the differences exhibited in the economic development indicators table? How is the current relationship between the U.S. and Mexico or Guatemala a continuation of a history of economic imperialism (neocolonialism)? Why should a person living in the United States be familiar with the trade relationship between the United States and Mexico or Guatemala and the fact that this relationship is experienced differentially on either side of the border? How might that understanding affect you as a consumer of goods and media in the U.S.? How might it lead you to question the symbolic violence that supports the structural violence?
