RESEARCH PAPER NEIGHBORHOOD MAPPING

INSTRUCTIONS

Project Instructions For this assignment, I want you to get a sense of the geographical concentration of particular social phenomena within the city. Using this tutorial as your guide, go to the website: http://www.city-data.com/nbmaps/neigh-New-York-New-York.html. Select the two census tracks or neighborhoods that you’d like to compare and contrast (compare poor areas to wealthy ones). For Manhattan, click on the neighborhood you wish to study and then select “Neighborhood Detail Profile.” Next, click the “% change since 2k” button highlighted below. Then click on the drop down menu and select Median Household Income . Finally, click the “Most Recent Value” button and you will now be able to access all the information you need from the drop down menu. Wealthy area codes (median income above $125k): 10007, 10013, 10014, 10023, 10021. Poor select from tracks within area codes (median income below $35k): 10029, 10002, 11206, 11207, 10455, 10456. Enter one of the two zip codes you wish to find a track within to study. Now select a track within that zip code. A black box will pop up on the right side of the screen. This will provide you with many (BUT NOT ALL) of the statistics that you need to collect. Scroll down to collect info on: 1. Median household income 2. Household type (use your mouse to get statistical details) 3. Population by race (same as above) 4. Median contract rent 5. Unemployment 6. % of residents with income below poverty level 7. Median Age 8. Gender You will have to look up using the drop down bar (or typing in what you’re searching for) For some of these variables you may have your census track change…that’s okay, try your best to find one that covers most of the area you were using for median income. Please be sure to list the zip code for these variables. 9. Renter occupied housing units 10. Educational Attainment Bachelor’s degree % 11. Educational Attainment Master’s degree % 12. Foreign Born % 13. Residents speaking English at home % 14. Residents speaking Spanish at home% How to find Methods section info for #3 “identify the particular census track or neighborhood you chose by listing the zip codes it contains, the population size, and household size of the two census tracks you chose.” STRUCTURE OF PAPER Introduction (3-4 paragraphs) 1. Introduce your mapping project and how you will be comparing and contrasting two neighborhoods in New York City on various social phenomena (list a few examples of which factors you will talk about in your discussion). Use these sociological factors in your project: Segregation, incarceration, poor education rates, etc. 2.Introduce and describe the two neighborhoods you chose your census tracks from. Provide a paragraph or two introducing each neighborhood. A. What borough is it in? B. What neighborhood? C. What is general public perception or history of each neighborhood? Take a look at Wikipedia for a quick sentence or two about each neighborhood. My chosen two neighborhoods in NYC for this research paper are: Midtown and Hunts Point area in the Bronx, NY. (ZIP Code: 10474). METHODS (1-2 paragraphs) 1. Reiterate how your study is a statistical analysis comparing and contrasting the concentration of various social phenomena across whichever two neighborhoods you chose. 2. Identify the two zip codes you first started off with in order to locate a low income and high income area and provide a sentence or two about why picked the neighborhoods you chose. 3. Then identify the particular census track you chose by listing the zip codes it contains, the population size, and household size of the two census tracks you chose. Remember the high income track must have a median income over $125,00, meanwhile the low income must have a median income below $25,000.
