Rampant Drug Use
Essay #4: Brave New World Book Length: a minimum of 5 pages of text, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font Assignment: Alduous Huxley wrote Brave New World in 1931, predicting a far future dystopian society in which consumerism runs amok, the public is inundated with drugs and media distractions, and power has been consolidated into an authoritarian regime. Do you believe any of Huxley’s predictions have come to pass? In what ways, if any, does our modern society resemble the one depicted in the novel? Using research as support (at least 3 outside sources), compare modern society to Brave New World. Does the novel seem dated, or is it a prescient warning of things to come? Expectations: Your essay will consist of the following elements: an original title, an introduction that defines and provides context for your topic, a clear thesis statement (this should state whether or not you believe modern society reflects the one seen in Brave New World), body paragraphs that provide specific examples to support your thesis and engage with outside sources, a conclusion paragraph to sum up your thoughts on the subject matter – where do you see our society going in the future? Advice: Pick a few of the major themes from the novel to analyze in your comparison to modern society. You don’t necessarily need to touch on all of them. Some examples to consider are genetic engineering, authoritarian government, mass consumerism, media distractions, rampant drug use, promoting happiness above deeper modes of thinking, etc. Use outside sources to examine these problems as they exist in modern society. Purpose: Demonstrate your ability use outside sources in conjunction with analysis of a novel in a clear, well-organized essay. Audience and Style: Your audience is educated adults. Avoid slang, jargon, or overly informal writing.
