The symbolism and interpretation of The Arnolfini Portrait’s by Jan van Eyck
A five- to seven-page research paper (including footnotes, but not including images and bibliography) on a work that post-dates 1250, pre-dates 1850, and is associated with one of the cultures or stylistic periods that we will cover in class. Each student will consult at least five reputable sources (articles from scholarly journals and books), at least two of which must be academic books. These must be cited appropriately, using the Chicago Manual of Style for footnotes and bibliography (see Purdue OWL online for an abbreviated guide). The ‘Research Guides’ section of Swem’s website will help lead you to academic articles and books. Since you may have to order books or articles through Interlibrary Loan, you should start the assignment early.
