Complex issue in the film Get Out
This assignment asks you to make a well organized, focused argument about one complex issue in the film Get Out. Choosing one of the following topics, you must write at least 4 full pages for this essay to support your argument. In your essay, you must: • Start with a general introduction paragraph that sets up some basic context of the film in relation to the topic you plan to analyze • establish a Clear, strong position on the issue, in an argumentative thesis stated at the end of the introduction paragraph • write at least 4 full pages that convincingly support your position, with all paragraphs attempting to prove your thesis statement • use specific details from the to support your answer • not use any outside sources, even for ideas • not make generalizations about real life; focus only on the film details. Please make sure to restate your thesis in the conclusion and link your analysis to the thesis throughout the paper. Choose one of the following essay topics: 1. What is the film saying about perspective? Whose perspective is values or not? Consider also how perspective works in terms of how the film itself is constructed and which perspective it gives to the audience. Also, is there any symbolism about perspective in the film?
2. What is the film saying about discrimination against africain Americans? Please go beyond the surface level of racism here; and show the deeper ways that discrimination is being shown to function in this movie. You can consider concepts such as micro aggressions, the consumptive/ fetishization of black bodies; the erasure of black women; historical context of racial violence; cultural appropriation etc. 3. What is the film ultimately saying about whiteness or white privilege in the United States? Consider the levels of privilege, including leaving their white bodies to start a new life, for any of the characters in the movie? Consider both the social privilege as well as the ability to commit violence onto someone’s body. 4. How does the film show the black protagonist in a positive way? How does Chris’ character go against the norm, both for horror movies, but also for a black male hero in any movie? How does he eventually “ get out “ in the end? 5. The film Get Out contains quite a bit of symbolism. Pick three major symbols, explain how each of them works to contribute to the main theme of the movie, with examples of each. You must analyze each symbol for at least one page. Please read the instructions carefully and don’t forget to give specific examples of the topic you will pick.
