Otherness and Authorship:
Close Explication and Literary Theory Examination Using two texts, examine Otherness and how the characters/poetic narrator interacts with a hostile or alienating surrounding culture. An Other is a cultural exile, one who doesn’t align with the dominant ideology of his/her society. It can relate to race, personal disposition, gender; any attribute that would separate the individual from the herd. First define what marks the narrator/character as Other and the external forces that enforce this Otherness, and then examine how this entity deals with his/her outsider status (whether they relish in it, find it damning, find redemption, etc). An excellent response would make sure to adequately examine both works and leave room at the end to cross examine the works and how each deals with a particular but interrelated experience of Otherness.
