HIV
1. Search. Using “Google Scholar” or another bibliographic database for peer-reviewed research on that disease. Locate 3 articles on the HIV, one article on the basic science (e.g. laboratory research, including animal studies) on the cause of the disease; the second article on patient-oriented (clinical diagnosis and care for ill people) studies, and the third article on population-level findings (epidemiology, or the distribution of the disease in large populations; health policy, such as mandatory vaccination). 2. Compose. Write an essay in which you answer the question, “Why does the disease persist in some populations? What are the unknowns in (a) the laboratory studies? (b) how to care for patients, and (c) why the disease is distributed according to the existing pattern among different populations of different countries? Organize your essay using the following prompts: 1) Discuss how the basic science, patient-oriented studies and population-level findings have contributed to disease prevention; 2) Explain why the disease has not been eradicated — or why the policy has not been effective; 3) Offer your recommendations for reform or change to the status quo.
