Can social conflict explain the emergence of capitalism?
Description
2000 word essay excluding the bibliography. Title of essay is: Can social conflict explain the emergence of capitalism? The question picks up on social conflict and competition and relates it to the theme of capitalism. Marx famously made class conflict central to the rise of capitalism. But is social conflict also relevant to the accounts offered by Weber and Veblen? That social conflict is present in the processes of capitalism is obvious enough, but what does it meant to say it ‘explains’ the emergence of capitalism? And if it does help explain it, does that mean conflict is a negative force for society? What would Lewis Coser say about this? As ever, define your terms
