Earthquake Planning,recovery and mitigation process.
Read the scenario below and write on how you would plan and begin the recovery process. Remember there is both short term and long term recovery needed. As well, think about including housing, economic recovery, environmental recovery, vulnerable populations, laws that may need to be changed for recovery, how you will communicate recovery planning to the public, and who will cover the cost of recovery. Finally, add how you might be able to mitigate for any future earthquakes. Please use real census data for Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky metropolitan area. Scenario: July 29, 2019 at 10:15am On this morning a 6.0 earthquake (Richter scale) occurred in the Greater Cincinnati area (at the Ohio Anomaly). Local Damage reports: Warren County: ruptured Commercial Pipelines, ruptured water lines near Lebanon, and electrical outages. Cell phone towers are on emergency power. Hamilton County: ruptured water lines, electrical outages, Western Hills Viaduct collapsed with 20 vehicles involved in the bridge collapse, multiple buildings damaged throughout the area with broken bricks, and broken glass. Public Health Department – Boil water advisory for all local counties due to numerous broken pipes. This is projected to last multiple weeks. Cell towers – most on generator power but cell phones are overwhelmed so limited use only Duke Energy – 80,000 without power in Northern Kentucky, Butler, Hamilton and Warren Counties There are electrical/telephone poles down and gas lines ruptured. Gas stations – many are reporting leaks in holding tanks and forced to close EMA has Estimated 10,000 people need short term shelters Boone County – Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky airport is functional but bridges to Indiana and Ohio are not open until after inspection. Underground pipeline from the airport fuel farm to Butler County Ohio is damaged in multiple places. There is enough aircraft fuel for the next 96 hours at the airport in storage. Ohio River, Great Miami River and small streams are polluted from pipelines. There are numerous older buildings with damage and are not safe in the major metropolitan area. The following major roads have been damaged and are closed: I-75 Brent Spence – closed at Harrison – 5th street in Covington Western Hills Viaduct Bridge – closed Downtown Cincinnati – 3rd street to 9th and from Plum to Walnut Harrison Ave from I-74 to Miami-town Many secondary roads are damaged and unusable
