What might be at stake for Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics?

2: What medium to long-term impacts do you think the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will have on Japan? Academic Level : Bachelor Paper details Week 6 Discussion 1: What might be at stake for Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics? We’ll look at two facets of the Olympic games in our discussion this week. The first question deals with motives for hosting an event on such a scale as the summer Olympics, and asks you to consider the past in contemplating what Japan’s motives might be relative to the 2020 games. The second question looks towards Japan’s future, and asks you to envision what that might look like, especially relative to impact(s) of the games. Question 1: What might be at stake for Japan in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics? Think back to Week 4 and Judith Snodgrass’ article “Japan Faces the West.” Japan’s exhibit at the 1983 expo in Chicago was seen as a way to prove, and to put on exhibit, Japan’s long and well-developed cultural history, and Snodgrass argues that it was an important step in international political maneuvering to try to get the “unequal treaties” revised. In this week’s content, the 1964 Tokyo Olympics are described as the chance for Japan to prove to the world that it had recovered from the devastation of war, and was ready once again to be considered as a major global power (see both the 1st and the 5th articles in the series by the Japan Times). After reading “Reconstruction and Robots,” which looks at both the 1964 and the 2020 games, and taking into account your own knowledge and awareness, what do you think Japan’s motives might be for hosting the games next year? (If you’re tempted to answer that the Olympics bring in a lot of money, have a look at “The Economics of Hosting the Olympic Games.” References: Reconstruction and Robots – Can Tokyo 2020 live up to 1964’s Olympic legacy https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/jun/11/robots-and-reconstruction-can-tokyo-2020-top-1964s-olympic-legacy The Economics of Hosting the Olympic Games https://www.cfr.org/backgrounder/economics-hosting-olympic-games Week 6 Discussion 2: What medium to long-term impacts do you think the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will have on Japan? (Discussion 6 Intro, repeat): We’ll look at two facets of the Olympic games in our discussion this week. Question 2: What medium to long-term impacts do you think the 2020 Tokyo Olympics will have on Japan? After the games have finished next August, and after, say, three months or so when most of the visitors who stretched out their stay have gone home, what do you think the legacy of the Tokyo Olympics will be this time around? To set about thinking about this, it would be helpful to look back at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and the preparations (both positive and negative), and to compare that to preparations for 2020. Also, consider the state of the Japanese economy and what you know of Japanese culture and society generally.
